As you know, Princesses rule our household and not a day goes by without Little Monkey and Baby Boy playing with their Princesses or dressing up as one. Little Monkey’s love for Princesses is what brought The Princess Ball to my attention last year. At first glance it looked like a fun afternoon celebrating Princesses but as I dug deeper, I learned that the Princess Ball is so much more. The annual event organized by Wishes for Olivia is meant to both build a legacy in memory of Olivia Grace White, who died suddenly at the age of 5, as well as raise money for Make-A-Wish Canada. I truly love that this family has been able to turn their tragedy into a legacy. Not only will Little Monkey and I be in attendance at this year’s Princess Ball, but we’re looking to bring another lucky pair with us!
Nearly 500 princesses and princes will arrive on-site at the historic Old Mill for The Princess Ball this April 17th. The event is in memory of a caring little girl named Olivia who died in her sleep on Boxing Day in 2012 of an undiagnosed blood infection. She is said to have had a tender heart and a giving spirit, so her mother, Jennifer White, started The Princess Ball as a grand gesture to turn her tragedy into legacy. All proceeds go to Make-A-Wish Canada to help other children’s dreams come true. Tickets for this auspicious and magical event are sold out but we have an adult and child package up for grabs! Also be sure to place your name on the waitlist if you’d like to purchase a ticket (an adult and child package is worth $250).
There’s no doubt that Olivia would have absolutely loved The Princess Ball and I know Little Monkey will as well. The Old Mill Inn is a fabulous venue and this year’s theme is inspired by the movie Brave ( one of Little Monkey’s faves as you may recall) to show kids that they can be whatever they dream to be. This would have been important to Olivia, who, at such a young age, already felt that all children should have the same opportunity to experience a little bit of magic in their lives.
The space will be transformed into a Scottish castle, complete with highland dancing! From noon to four p.m. parents and their Princesses and Princes’ will engage in activities such as face painting, meeting official Princesses and enjoying a three course meal. There’s going to be raffles and chances for us to not only make this a special day for our little Princesses, but also make a difference in the lives of other families who can use a smile and a helping hand. I haven’t told Little Monkey about the event just yet because I know the excitement will lead to hourly “Are we going to the Princess party tomorrow?” “How about after 2 sleeps” “Oh but that’s too long!! Can’t we just go after 4 sleeps? Please”. Yeah… so I’m waiting until the week of April 17th to tell her about this amazing event and help her pick out her Princess dress (she has no shortage of costumes!). As for me, I plan to wear a fancy dress but you won’t find me in costume as I know there will be official Princesses at the event and there’s no need to confuse the kids!
Wishes for Olivia participates in a number of fundraising activities throughout the year and Wishes for Olivia has raised over $130,000 for Make-A-Wish Canada.
